Laurie Metcalf has crafted a version of Linda Loman that stands firmly alongside her husband in the latest Broadway revival.
The production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, directed by Joe Mantello at the Winter Garden Theatre, stars Nathan Lane as Willy Loman. Metcalf portrays Linda in a performance that earned her a Tony nomination. The revival received a total of nine Tony nominations.
A PBS NewsHour CANVAS segment featuring the two actors aired on May 27 and 28, 2026. In the interview conducted at the theatre, Metcalf explained her deliberate choice to approach the character without prior exposure to other productions.
"I purposely have never seen a production of the play because I thought maybe way down the line, I'll be able to play Linda Loman at some point... I wanted to go in fresh," Metcalf said.
She further elaborated on her interpretation during an appearance on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday on May 30, 2026. Metcalf described her intent to balance the character's traditional traits with greater agency.
"I try to go in making her not just the protector or the enabler of lies that go on in the house but also as a 50/50 partner with Willy," Metcalf stated.
This perspective reframes Linda within the 77-year-old play's family dynamics. The Winter Garden production highlights her presence as an active participant rather than a passive observer in Willy's circumstances.
BroadwayWorld covered the PBS segment shortly after its broadcast, noting the actors' discussion of the revival's approach to the material. The NPR interview, conducted by Scott Simon, focused on Metcalf's preparation process and her avoidance of previous interpretations.
Metcalf's comments arrive as the production continues its run with strong industry recognition. The nine Tony nominations span multiple categories, including acting and design elements.
