Broadway performers gather at Joe's Pub to celebrate Judy Garland on June 1.
The 14th Annual Night of a Thousand Judys Pride concert starts at 7 PM at the New York City venue. A VIP post-show reception follows the main program. Written and hosted by Justin Elizabeth Sayre, the event showcases artists offering personal interpretations of Garland rather than standard tributes.
Nathan Lee Graham, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Claybourne Elder, Alysha Umphress, Marty Lauter, Aisha de Haas, Adam Kantor, Leah Siegel, and Jae W.B. appear on the bill. The concert presents the Judy Icon Award to Charles Busch and the Good Judy Award to Steven Tartick.
Early on, we decided that far from a typical tribute show, this was about inviting artists from all over the creative map to present their take on Judy Garland, to show us what Judy means to them. I think it makes for a really fascinating evening, because it’s always new.
Justin Elizabeth Sayre, writer-performer and host of the concert, described the format in a recent interview. The approach draws performers from varied creative backgrounds to keep each edition distinct.
Proceeds from the evening support The Ali Forney Center, which assists LGBTQ+ homeless youth. Sayre noted Garland's personal connection to her audience.
Playbill and BroadwayWorld reported the complete performer list and award details earlier this month. A HuffPost feature published later in May included additional comments from Sayre on Garland's legacy and the concert's ongoing format.
