Black women who shape the Broadway stage came together to honor their peers at a special afternoon event.
The 5th Annual Black Women on Broadway Awards occurred on June 1, 2026, at CURRENT at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Organizers recognized four women for their artistry and leadership in the theater community.
BWOB co-founders Jocelyn Bioh, Danielle Brooks, and Amber Iman welcomed attendees at the start of the program. The group emphasized the event's role in highlighting achievements by Black women.
Actress Taraji P. Henson took the stage to present the Kathy A. Perkins Behind The Curtain Award. She gave the honor to her longtime friend Whitney White, an Obie and Tony Award-nominated director, writer, and performer.
Emmy Award-winning actress Ayo Edebiri introduced Alana Raquel Bowers. Bowers received the Florence Mills Shining Star Award for her contributions.
Debra Martin Chase earned the Audra McDonald Legacy Award. Destiny Lilly received the Special Citation Trailblazer Award.
Other notable guests at the celebration included LaChanze along with additional members of the Broadway community.

This moment is designed to uplift and celebrate the achievements of Black women in theatre and enjoy an afternoon where this incredible community can really see and feel the impact that we have made both in the industry and for each other."
The afternoon featured moments captured in photos from inside the venue. Guests enjoyed the opportunity to connect and reflect on the progress made by Black women in the industry.
