Composer Robert Lopez stepped onto a Broadway stage for the first time when he played Moroni in The Book of Mormon.
The appearance took place on the third night of Magical Mormon Mystery Week, which ran June 9 through 14, 2026, at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre in New York City. Trey Parker played Jesus and Matt Stone played Mormon in the same prologue sequence.
The week celebrated the musical's 15th anniversary. The show first opened on March 24, 2011. Original cast members Andrew Rannells, Josh Gad, Nikki M. James, and Rory O'Malley performed in all eight scheduled shows.
"Who would have ever thought?" said Robert Lopez, EGOT composer and co-creator.
Lopez spoke after the performance. His cameo marked the first time he had acted in the production he helped create.
Creators Parker, Lopez, and Stone joined select performances throughout the week. The Book of Mormon official site listed the full schedule of guest appearances in advance.
Instagram clips posted by the show's account and audience members captured Lopez entering during the prologue. The footage shows the three creators sharing the stage for the opening sequence before the regular cast continued the performance.
The Eugene O'Neill Theatre hosted every show of the anniversary week. Ticket sales reflected strong interest in the original cast reunions and the surprise creator appearances.
