Mikaal Sulaiman claimed a historic Tony Award on June 7, 2026, as the first Black sound designer to win in the category.
The 79th Annual Tony Awards took place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Sulaiman received Best Sound Design of a Play for the current revival of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman."
The production also won Best Revival of a Play. It starred Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, who took the award for Best Leading Actress in a Play.

Sulaiman shared additional thoughts on the recognition. He noted the collaborative nature of the work and the privilege of contributing to the production.
I'm beyond grateful for this nomination. Being part of this inventive production was already a privilege, but to receive this honor on top of that reminds me how lucky I am to do this work alongside artists I deeply admire.
