Beaches Musical to Close Early on Broadway

The production based on the 1988 film will end its run at the Majestic Theatre on May 24 after limited performances amid soft sales.

Broadway's new musical Beaches is ending its run at the Majestic Theatre earlier than planned.

The show, which began previews on March 27 and opened on April 22, will now play its final performance on May 24. It was originally scheduled to continue through September 6. At closing the production will have completed 28 preview performances and 38 regular performances.

The New York Times reported that the early closure follows negative reviews and soft ticket sales. A national tour is planned for 2027.

Broadway.com confirmed the full details of the announcement, including the complete cast and creative team. Jessica Vosk stars as Cee Cee Bloom opposite Kelli Barrett as Bertie White.

Ben Jacoby plays Michael Barron while Brent Thiessen portrays John Perry. Samantha Schwartz and Zeya Grace appear as Little Cee Cee and Little Bertie respectively.

The supporting company includes Sarah Bockel, Harper Burns, Eric Coles, Taylor Sage Evans, Mia Gerachis, Joelle Gully, Stephanie Martignetti, Emma Ogea, Olive Ross-Kline, Bailey Ryon, Paul Adam Schaefer, Lael Van Keuren and Zurin Villanueva.

Direction is by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart. The book is written by Iris Rainer Dart, who also penned the original novel, and Thom Thomas. Mike Stoller composed the music with lyrics by Dart.

Choreography is by Jennifer Rias. The musical was developed in collaboration with David Austin and features orchestrations by Charlie Rosen.

Playbill tracked performance totals through mid-May and confirmed the revised schedule. The production is based on the bestselling book and the 1988 film that starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey.
