Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey received top honors at Lincoln Center Theater's Spring Gala on Monday night.
The annual event took place May 18 at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York City. Organizers recognized the Emmy Award-winning producer and the Academy Award-winning actor for their contributions to the performing arts and their recent engagement with live theater.
A one-night-only concert presentation of Man of La Mancha served as the centerpiece of the evening. Internationally acclaimed opera singer Rolando Villazón starred as Cervantes and Don Quixote. Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, Lincoln Center Theater's executive producer, directed the concert staging.
The gala achieved a record-breaking fundraising total. The performance sold out completely, marking the highest single-evening contributions in the organization's history.
Industry figures filled the theater for the occasion. Guests included Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Bettany, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, Mark Strong, Stephen Flaherty, and Anthony Roth Costanzo.
Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey issued a statement following the tribute.
Thank you to Bart, Lear, and the entire Lincoln Center Theater team for this great honor. We look forward to being back at the Vivian Beaumont in May, reuniting with the incredible theater community that embraced us wholeheartedly. Our McNeal experience was a creative journey that continues to inspire us long after the run.
Robert Downey Jr., the Academy Award-winning actor, and Susan Downey, the Emmy Award-winning producer, shared these reflections in their joint statement after the event. The appearance followed Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the stage in the play McNeal. That production represented his first live theater performance in nearly thirty years. The evening blended star attendance with a classic musical work to support Lincoln Center Theater's programming. The successful outcome highlighted ongoing connections between film talent and the Broadway community. Additional programming support will help sustain future productions and educational initiatives at the venue.
