Crowds gathered on the lawn of the newly opened Norton Commons Amphitheater in North Liberty for its inaugural concert featuring country singer Colton Kise on May 23.
The event came after more than 15 years of planning for the venue. Attendees brought chairs and blankets to sit on the grass while enjoying the performance. Families and out-of-state visitors made up the audience for this first live music show at the amphitheater.
Kristen Sharma, an attendee from Coralville, was drawn in by the sound of the music.
"I could hear the girl singing, and she was awesome, so I had to check it out."
Shannon Walters traveled from Fairbanks, Alaska, to attend the concert. She appreciated the chance to enjoy live music in an outdoor theater setting.
"In Fairbanks, we don’t have much for live music, so seeing an outdoor theater being able to hang out here, it’s going to be fun."
Mason Fedler, a member of the band DOV and an attendee at the event, commented on the shared experience of music.
"Just like all the fans playing and performing."
Following the successful first show, the amphitheater has additional performances scheduled for the summer. Local acts such as DOV are among the upcoming artists set to take the stage. The debut has generated interest in the venue as a new spot for community entertainment and live performances.
Planning for the amphitheater spanned over a decade and a half before the venue could host its first event. The completion allowed for this milestone performance that drew significant local attention.
The concert showcased the potential of the space to host various genres and artists in the coming seasons. Organizers expressed satisfaction with the turnout and the positive response from those who attended the show.
The outdoor setting allowed for a casual and inviting environment. Visitors noted the appeal of the space for future events. The project, long in the making, now offers residents and tourists a place to gather for concerts. Many locals described the evening as memorable due to the relaxed atmosphere and clear acoustics across the open lawn area. Additional seating options and improved lighting are planned to enhance comfort at future shows. Community members have already begun discussing ways to support ongoing events through volunteer efforts and local sponsorships.
