Gina Gionfriddo has earned her first Tony Award nomination for the Broadway revival of her play Becky Shaw.
The limited-run production opened April 8 at the Hayes Theater and closes June 14. Second Stage Theatre presents the show, which marks the play's first appearance on Broadway after its 2008 Off-Broadway debut and Pulitzer Prize finalist status.
The revival received two Tony nominations in total. Alden Ehrenreich earned a nod for Best Featured Actor in a Play alongside Gionfriddo's recognition for Best Revival of a Play. Nominations were announced in May 2026.
Gionfriddo discussed the origins of the work in a recent interview. She traced the initial spark to a specific costume choice that mirrored her own experience. The initial spark was: There’s a dress we call ‘the birthday cake dress’ in the play — that Becky shows up for this blind date overdressed — and I had done it myself, according to Gina Gionfriddo, the playwright.
The playwright described the central focus of the savage comedy as the rituals of modern relationships. She explained that the story examines how people connect and the expectations that shape those connections.
The production continues its engagement at the Hayes Theater in New York through mid-June. The recognition highlights the play's lasting place in contemporary theater after nearly two decades since its premiere. Audiences have responded positively to the sharp dialogue and character dynamics that define the narrative. The themes resonate with viewers navigating similar social situations today. Cast members bring fresh energy to the revival while honoring the original vision of the work.
